The Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (‘CIArb’) has launched a training program aimed at meeting the increasing demands for accredited arbitrators and arbitration practitioners to resolve cross border disputes in the Asia Pacific.

The CIArb Asia Pacific Diploma in International Commercial Arbitration course, which carries a recognised global qualification, is a joint venture between the Australia, East Asia and Singapore branches of the CIArb, a global network which is represented in over 250 commercial sectors in 130 countries.

CIArb Australia President and Barrister, Albert Monichino QC, said:

“With increased globalisation and the shift of the economic global axis to the East, international arbitration is assuming greater importance for practising lawyers in the Asia Pacific. This course is aimed at meeting the needs of aspiring international arbitration practitioners and arbitrators in the region.”

Sponsored by leading law firms and supported by global arbitral bodies, the Diploma course was first launched in Australia 10 years, ago attracting professionals from a diversity of sectors.

Under the terms of the agreement, the course will be conducted in Singapore (2016), Hong Kong (2017) and Australia (2018).

This year Singapore will host the course for the first time to meet the demand for arbitration expertise in the region. In 2015 the country’s leading arbitration institute, the Singapore International Arbitration Centre (‘SIAC’), received 271 new cases from parties in 55 jurisdictions, a 22% increase from 2014, achieving a record quantum of $6.23 billion, evidencing the continual growth of international arbitration in the region.

CIArb Singapore Chairman and Head of Dispute Resolution, Rajah & Tann, Francis Xavier SC PBM said:

“We see this agreement as a significant step in a strategic alliance between us to jointly promote our services to the global market that will ensure the delivery of commercial benefits for investors.”

The faculty will comprise leading practitioners, academics and jurists expert in the field of global dispute resolution drawn from all three jurisdictions.

Hong-Kong based Chairman of the East Asia branch and Barrister, DeVeaux Chambers, Richard Leung said:

“We are very pleased to be involved in such a prestigious enterprise which will significantly enhance expertise supporting the trade and investment relationships in the region.”

The nine day program will run from 20 – 28 August 2016 in Singapore. Expressions of Interest, can be registered at  https://www.ciarb.net.au/training/diploma2016
